Sculptor Kwon Chi-gyu's 34th solo exhibition, "Genesis — Traces of Becoming," opened Wednesday at Gallery 6 on the sixth floor of Insa Art Center.
The exhibition centers on what Kwon calls the "growth point," referring to both the part of a plant where growth occurs and — more broadly — to the point from which life begins, changes and forms new connections.
Kwon uses perforated stainless steel and overlapping layers as key visual elements. Lines cut into and built from the metal resemble branches, roots, cellular networks and streams of light, while shadows extend the works beyond their physical surfaces. Layers of yellow, light green, blue and purple add depth to the metallic structures.
According to Kim Yoon-sub, head of AIF Art Management Institute, the exhibition condenses Kwon's recurring themes of nature, life and resilience into a more structural form. Kim said the works suggest possibilities of recovery and renewed connections among nature, people and communities.
"Genesis — Traces of Becoming" runs through Aug. 24.
