Diplomats from 19 countries have been invited to participate in a networking event in Chungju, North Chungcheong Province, where they will take part in various activities in culture, tourism and the industrial sector.

The event, jointly hosted by The Korea Herald and the Chungju Culture and Tourism Foundation, is being held Tuesday and Wednesday, ahead of Visit Chungju Year 2027.

The ambassadors represent countries spanning Asia, Europe, Africa and South America and are to be accompanied by diplomatic officials and their families.

Former United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is also scheduled to appear at the event.

The foundation and the Chungju city government said the event will contribute to solidifying trust and the bond between the diplomats, while promoting the city to global society.

"It is very meaningful to host the diplomats from 19 countries ahead of the Visit Chungju Year 2027. ... We hope that this event will show the world the charm of Chungju — combining cutting-edge technology, traditional culture and local culinary culture — acting as a catalyst as the city propels itself as a hub city for global K-culture," a Chungju official said.

Chungju has been pushing to attract more long-term tourists, combining lodging, various events and consumer appeal. It has been reported that officials across the city government have been working on tasks concerning tourism, culture, arts and food.

Mayor Lee Dong-seok on Sept. 15 met with representatives of Yanolja, one of the largest travel platforms here, to discuss ways to promote tourism and establish infrastructure for "smart tourism," leveraging smart technology to enhance the travel experience.
