A high school student recently witnessed a fire in the streets and ran out to extinguish it by herself, fire authorities in Jeonnam-Gwangju said Tuesday.
Kim Seung-u, 18, was studying at a private institute in Mokpo when she saw smoke through the window around 4 p.m. on Friday. Flames from a power transformer had spread to discarded boxes surrounding it, according to officials.
Kim grabbed a nearby fire extinguisher, asked a passerby to call the fire department and sprayed the flames. After the fire had been out for five minutes, she doused the area in water.
"I was afraid at first, but I always told myself I would step up without hesitation if something like this happened," she was quoted as saying.
No injuries occurred from the fire.
Mokpo Fire Station plans to present Kim with a certificate of appreciation for her bravery and quick response.
